A geek stranded on Martha’s Vineyard

hello world!

June 09, 2010

For a while I've preaching about Rails to my friends, most of them still developing in Java, .NET and PHP. I knew that if I built my own blog with WordPress they would make fun of me.

This is the reason why I decided to use Ruby on Rails, plus some gems, so far Authlogic and will_paginate.

For the design, I tweaked Bueno, one of the free themes by WooThemes. The first change was to include the year for post dates, how useful is a technical article if we don't know when it was written?

The background color reminds me of the beaches of Martha's Vineyard, and I love the font used for post titles, it's called ChunkFive and uses Cufón.

The most fun part was deploying, the guys at Heroku have done an amazing job with hosting, it's so easy that even feels a little boring.

The name is an idea of my friend John Wait, I tweeted announcing I had started working on my blog and he replied "Cool Beans". At first I thought he believed I was going to use JavaBeans, after googling it I realized it was a good name.

Today is the second day at RailsConf 2010, so the timing for the first post couldn't be better.
